Problem

Software engineering teams spend substantial time on repetitive, error-prone work that still requires skilled developers: legacy-code modernization, large-scale migrations, bug fixing, testing, documentation, issue triage, and release maintenance. The pain is both operational and economic: engineering hours are diverted from higher-value product work, while modernization projects can take months and become costly to execute. Cognition’s clearest “killer” use case is delegating large code migrations and refactors to an AI agent; Nubank reported an 8–12x efficiency improvement and more than 20x cost savings on a migration touching millions of lines of code.

Product / Service

Cognition’s core product is Devin, an autonomous AI software engineer delivered through cloud agents and enterprise software. Devin can plan and execute complex engineering tasks, retain context, learn from feedback, and use a shell, code editor, browser, and other developer tools inside a sandboxed environment. It can build and deploy applications, investigate and fix bugs, review pull requests, perform visual QA, modernize legacy systems, generate documentation, triage incidents, and automate tickets through integrations, its API, and scheduled workflows. Multiple agents can work in parallel, while human developers review changes and merge the resulting pull requests.

The service is offered through free, individual, team, and enterprise plans, with cloud-agent access, model choice, collaboration, integrations, analytics, security controls, and dedicated support varying by tier. Cognition is also incorporating Windsurf’s IDE capabilities into its portfolio; Windsurf has been rebranded as Devin Desktop, giving teams an interface for managing agents alongside an interactive development environment. The intended benefit is leverage: teams can increase software output and accelerate modernization without requiring engineers to perform every intermediate step manually.

Market

Cognition competes in the expanding AI coding and software-engineering automation market, spanning autonomous coding agents and AI-enhanced development environments. The company describes IDEs and agents as the two main forms of AI coding tools and positioned its acquisition of Windsurf as a way to offer both. Relevant competitors include Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, OpenAI Codex, and Kiro, which compete for developers’ coding assistance, agent workflows, or enterprise software-engineering budgets.

Cognition is well beyond the pre-revenue stage. In its May 2026 funding announcement, the company reported more than $1 billion raised at a $26 billion valuation, run-rate revenue of $492 million, and enterprise usage growing more than tenfold since the start of the year. It cited customers including Citi, Mercedes-Benz, Goldman Sachs, Dell, Santander, the U.S. Army, the U.S. Navy, Nubank, and Mercado Libre; Mercedes-Benz reportedly reduced an eight-month legacy-modernization project to eight days. The acquired Windsurf business had contributed $82 million of ARR, more than 350 enterprise customers, and hundreds of thousands of daily active users at the time of the 2025 acquisition.
