Problem

Crop producers face substantial yield and revenue losses from fungal and bacterial disease. Flourish identifies pathogens including Pseudomonas syringae, Xanthomonas, Xylella and Botrytis as damaging commercially important crops such as tomatoes, olives, vines, citrus and stone fruit. The economics are severe: FAO estimates that pests and diseases account for up to 40% of global crop-production losses, while plant diseases cost the global economy more than $220 billion annually. The killer use case is protecting high-value crops from disease without relying on conventional chemical protection.

A second, related pain is inefficient nitrogen management. Excess or poorly managed nitrogen creates fertilizer costs and contributes to ammonia, nitrate and nitrous-oxide pollution. Flourish’s ICON project therefore targets the soil nitrogen cycle as well as plant pathogens, aiming to help growers maintain yields while using nutrients more efficiently and reducing environmental damage.

Product / Service

Flourish is a UK biotechnology business developing crop-protection and seed-treatment products based on its patented Guided Biotics® technology. The approach uses CRISPR, described by the company as the natural bacterial immune system, to selectively remove unwanted or disease-causing microbes rather than indiscriminately disrupting the crop microbiome. Guided Biotics® can be applied directly by foliar or soil treatment or through seed treatment, while supporting beneficial bacteria so they can occupy space and contribute to plant health and yield.

The company is also extending the platform into soil health and nutrient management. Its two-year DEFRA-funded ICON project, conducted with the John Innes Centre, is intended to produce proof-of-concept prototypes that control key steps in the soil nitrogen cycle, potentially improving nitrogen-use efficiency and reducing synthetic-fertilizer requirements and pollution. The commercial delivery model appears to be partnership-led: Flourish is developing products and actively seeking established agricultural, academic and nonprofit partners to expand its technology and product offering.

Market

Flourish competes in sustainable biological crop protection, microbial seed treatment, plant and soil microbiome engineering, and biological nutrient management. Its broad competitive set includes established agricultural-biologicals suppliers such as BASF, Syngenta, Bayer, FMC, Corteva and UPL. Flourish’s intended distinction is a precise, “direct-by-design” CRISPR mode of action for selectively managing crop and soil microbes, rather than a conventional broad-spectrum chemical approach; however, the evidence does not establish that any of those large companies is a direct head-to-head rival for a launched Flourish product.

The company is at an early, pre-commercial stage based on the available evidence. Its clearest traction is the February 2025 award of a two-year DEFRA feasibility grant for ICON and its collaboration with the John Innes Centre to develop proof-of-concept prototypes. Flourish says it is still developing Guided Biotics® products and seeking partnerships, while Companies House records Flourish Bioscience Ltd as an active private company incorporated on 22 December 2025 for biotechnology research and experimental development. No commercial sales, revenue, launched product or field-scale performance data appears in the evidence, so it is best characterized as pre-revenue or, at minimum, revenue-undisclosed and still in R&D rather than as a commercial agricultural-products business.
