Problem

PlanetScale addresses the point at which a conventional relational database becomes a bottleneck for a fast-growing application. Horizontal sharding can provide nearly unlimited capacity, but MySQL does not support it natively and managing shard keys, data placement, and cross-shard queries is technically complex. The pain is operational as well as technical: failed migrations can consume weeks of engineering time, outages can cost millions in lost revenue, and database egress can make workloads both slower and more expensive.

The killer use case is a high-volume, data-intensive application that needs to keep scaling without building and operating bespoke database infrastructure. Cash App illustrates the extreme: its PlanetScale deployment handles roughly 3–4 million queries per second across 400 shards and about 400 TiB of data, while offloading the management burden to PlanetScale.

Product / Service

PlanetScale is a managed relational database platform offering both Vitess/MySQL and PostgreSQL. Its Vitess service uses horizontal sharding to distribute data across servers without requiring customers to add sharding logic to application code. Its Postgres offering is a fully managed, high-availability cluster running in AWS and GCP, with PlanetScale Metal providing high-performance NVMe-backed infrastructure.

The delivery model combines managed operations with developer-oriented database workflows. Branching creates isolated database environments, while deploy requests let teams review and apply non-blocking schema changes with zero downtime. Replicas, automated failover, connection pooling, backups, observability, private connectivity, and multi-region support reduce the operational work required to run a production database; the resulting benefit is greater scale and reliability with less database DevOps, and in some customer cases materially lower cost.

Market

PlanetScale competes in managed cloud relational databases and database-as-a-service, with a particular historical strength in high-scale MySQL/Vitess workloads and an expanding position in managed Postgres. Its own competitive set names Supabase, Neon, Heroku, and Aurora, while customer migrations also show it competing against Amazon RDS, CloudSQL, Aurora, and Neon. The differentiation is the combination of managed service, sharding expertise, high performance, and safe schema-development workflows rather than simply offering an undifferentiated hosted database.

The company is clearly commercial rather than pre-revenue: its pricing is advertised from $5 per month, Postgres reached general availability in September 2025, and PlanetScale says hundreds of companies already trust the Postgres product for production workloads. Its customer evidence includes Cursor, Intercom, Block, Cash App, MyFitnessPal, and others, with Cash App demonstrating extreme production scale. PlanetScale also reported $105 million in total funding by November 2021; the available evidence supports substantial customer and product traction, but does not provide a current revenue figure.
