Problem

Temporal addresses the reliability problem in distributed software: long-running workflows span multiple services, machines, APIs, and sometimes human intervention, so crashes, timeouts, and partial failures can leave work incomplete or force developers to rebuild state management, retries, and recovery logic. The economic pain is largely engineering capacity, operational risk, duplicated work, and customer-facing incidents. Replit migrated its coding agent to Temporal to improve reliability and free platform-team time, while Coinbase replaced a custom Saga engine to process millions of crypto transactions more reliably and increase developer velocity. AI coding agents that must preserve state across long-running tasks and operate reliably at scale are a particularly strong use case.

Product / Service

Temporal is an open-source durable-execution platform. Developers model application processes as workflows; Temporal records state as the workflow advances, automatically retries failed or timed-out activities, and resumes execution from the correct point after a crash or interruption. This lets teams write business logic without building as much bespoke orchestration and failure-recovery infrastructure, while supporting long-running execution and human intervention.

The software is available for customers to run themselves under the MIT license, or Temporal can host the service for them through its managed cloud offering. The resulting benefit is application behavior that is resilient to infrastructure and dependency failures, with less manual recovery work and more predictable execution for complex processes.

Market

Temporal competes in durable execution and workflow orchestration, alongside platforms and frameworks such as Kestra, Akka, Camunda, AWS Step Functions, Netflix Conductor, Inngest, and Apache Airflow. Its differentiation is a code-oriented execution model focused on preserving workflow state and making retries, recovery, and long-running application logic reliable, rather than limiting orchestration to short-lived configuration-defined pipelines.

Temporal is clearly commercial and not pre-revenue. Temporal Cloud surpassed 1,000 customers in April 2024; a March 2025 company announcement cited more than 2,500 customers globally and revenue; and in February 2026 the company announced a $300 million Series D at a $5 billion valuation. The company has also highlighted large-scale production adoption, including Replit’s AI coding agent and Coinbase’s transaction infrastructure.
