Ubicloud addresses the cost, lock-in, and lack of control created by conventional public clouds such as AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud. Those providers simplify infrastructure but are closed systems that charge a substantial premium for rented compute and make it harder to move workloads. Ubicloud’s core economic proposition is to run cloud services on lower-cost bare-metal infrastructure, with the company saying its managed cloud can reduce comparable cloud spending by roughly 3–10x.

The clearest high-value use case is ephemeral CI/CD infrastructure, especially GitHub Actions. Ubicloud provides isolated, clean virtual machines for individual jobs and says customers can reduce runner costs by up to 10x with a one-line workflow change. Other strong use cases include cost-sensitive managed PostgreSQL and compute- or memory-intensive workloads where public-cloud pricing is particularly painful.

Product / Service

Ubicloud is an open-source infrastructure-as-a-service cloud that can run on bare-metal providers including Hetzner, Leaseweb, OVH, Latitude.sh, and AWS Bare Metal. Its platform provides cloud primitives such as elastic compute, virtual networking, block storage, firewall and load-balancing capabilities, identity and access management, managed PostgreSQL, Kubernetes, and GitHub Actions runners. The architecture follows a conventional cloud control-plane/data-plane model while using open-source components such as Linux KVM and Cloud Hypervisor for virtualization.

Customers can consume Ubicloud as a managed service without installing anything, or self-host the software to retain control of their infrastructure. The managed model passes through the lower cost of bare-metal capacity, while the open-source and portable design reduces vendor lock-in and permits deployment across providers or in a customer-controlled environment. Ubicloud also emphasizes minimal egress fees to make moving between clouds less punitive.

Market

Ubicloud competes in cloud infrastructure and IaaS, positioned as an open-source and portable alternative to hyperscale public clouds. Its direct strategic competitors are AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud, while more narrowly scoped alternatives include other lower-cost developer clouds and platforms such as DigitalOcean, Render, and Railway. Ubicloud differentiates through open source, portability, bare-metal economics, and particularly aggressive pricing for PostgreSQL, compute, and CI workloads.

The company is an early-stage but visibly launched commercial platform rather than an unvalidated pre-product project. Ubicloud reports that it is used by hundreds of high-performing teams, its public repository has more than 12,000 stars, and it was part of Y Combinator’s W24 batch and raised $16 million in seed funding. Public materials reviewed do not disclose revenue or a specific customer count beyond the “hundreds” claim, so revenue scale cannot be determined; however, ongoing product releases and a January 2026 reference to customers running PostgreSQL on Ubicloud indicate active adoption.
